Is it time to tan?

I've got a bit of a fear of awful looking fake tan.  I notice it really easily on other people, and I would be so critical and paranoid if I wore fake tan that looked, well, fake, but I'm in a bit of a quandary because right now I'm just feeling a bit fed up with my pale skin, I don't think it does me any favours and seeing as I have to get various limbs out for my course (beauty therapy) I feel as though I'd be more comfortable doing so if I had a bit of a glow instead of the dull flubber that currently has to be uncovered!

But, where do I start?

I've bought fake tans in the past but I've never really used them - I get the fear and never commit! Does anyone have any tips for me? Which tan should I go for, how and when is best to apply it? Do they all stain the sheets? How do I avoid looking like an oompa loompa? How do you do your back if you just can't reach it?!

If anyone has got any tips I'd be really grateful.  I know it's something people do day in, day out but I don't and I'm not sure where to start!!

  1. Alice, I know exactly how you feel! But a few months ago I bought some St. Morez (cheapest of cheap, as I'm skint as ever!), and an application mitt, and now I can't get enough of it! I just do my legs, but love the glow I get from it. Be brave, and have a go!!X

  3. I'm a bit of a tan o phobe too, scared of being an oompa loompa. I find the best thing to do is really invest in one, they look more natural than cheaper ones.
I would also say, start by just focusing on your legs, as they are easiest to cover up haha. Also, I would recommend a mitt as they give more even coverage.
Mmm, go little by little and build up too so it's more natural.
My fave fake tan is this one (not trying to push my post but ya know haha, http://call-of-beauty-xo.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/sun-in-bottle.html)
Hope this helps haha, I'm not really an expert haha!

    1. Thanks for the advice Laura (and great blog post by the way...I like the look of that stuff!!) Does the Vita Liberata Tinted Self Tan stain the sheets? Or turn them orange over night? Because I live with a family friend and she's been kind enough to allow me to use her bedding instead of bringing my own but I don't want to take the piss and make it look like I've been rolling around in wotsits in her sheets!!
I'm eager to give it a go, so I think you're right, I'll start with my legs and work my way up!

  5. Id realllly recommend the garnier gradual self tan, its really just a moisturiser that develops a slight tan over a few hours...nothing too scary, and if one application isnt dark enough you can just stick another coat on! Ive used it for about 5 years and have never had any streaking/orange marks in the bed!
    Hope this helps!

    1. Thanks for the advice Nicole, I've been applying the Garnier one now for three days and I don't think anything too horrific has happened so far...one problem is getting my back done though...I'm struggling with that haha! It's got quite a strong smell hasn't it, but oh well it'll be worth it if I don't look so washed out all the time!!

  6. I agree with Julia, St Moriz is amazing! I use the lotion one, they have a spray and a mousse too, with the St Moriz mitt. It dries pretty quickly so you don't have to worry about stained sheets. I do this about once or twice a week :) xx

    1. Thanks for your advice Rosie :) I'm being a bit of a wimp at the minute and using a gradual tanning moisturiser but I'm sure I'll work up to a 'proper' tan soon!! xxx
